April 7: An Unfortunate First Day of School (4月7日 不幸な入学初日, Shigatsu Nanoka: Fukō na Nyūgaku Shonichi?) is the first episode of Anne Happy♪. The episode premiered on April 7, 2016.

Synopsis[]

Starting her first day at a new school, the withdrawn Ruri comes across a strange girl with a penchant for getting into trouble and soon learns they will both be attending class 7; a class for unfortunate students that focuses on trying to bring out their true talents to have a successful life. As Ruri tries to deal with unlucky An and Botan, a classmate who gets hurt all the time, they are given their first assignment.

Summary[]

On a bright sunny day, several girls prepare for school and leave home. One being a young woman named Ruri who will be going a new path to her brand new high school. She isn't looking forward to it, but she thinks about the loved one she can still see afterwards while trying to find her way there. Along the way, she hears frightened barking and looks over the bridge she stands on to spot a girl hanging from one of the beams by her shirt.

She asks the girl if she is okay and tosses her shoes and bag aside to hop onto the ledge to try to help her. She warns the girl not to speak but she doesn't listen, introducing herself after the girl asks for Ruri's name, going on to decide to nickname her Hibari. Just then, the beam breaks and she tosses the dog into the air before being sent plummeting into the river.

Ruri runs around the bridge and down a nearby grass hill to help Anne, but Anne is more focused on the dog and she picks it back up while assuring her that she's fine. Ruri watches as the dog bites into Anne's hand to the point of drawing blood, forcing her to release it. An wonders if the dog was in a foul mood as it runs away, and Ruri complains while bandaging her hand with some fabric she has on hand. Anne thanks Ruri for helping her and the school bell starts ringing. Anne suggests they hurry and grabs onto Ruri, who yells out that she still needs to get her shoes.

During the Opening Ceremony, Ruri feels perplexed as she realizes she shares a class with Anne. She also observes an ill girl being escorted into their section, lamenting that she left home early and still showed up late before collapsing onto the floor. Once in class, Ruri realizes she never learned the other girls name, and after she introduces herself as "Anne", Ruri decides to nickname her Hanako in return for Anne nicknaming her Hibari. Anne's cheery response causes Ruri some concern as she goes on to admit having only signed up for this school since it's so close to her home, and Ruri ponders what got them accepted there. She likes to cook but she doesn't believe she has any special talents, so Anne wonders if maybe her interests played a role in determining where to send them.

The weakly girl from before begins to laugh and admits to eavesdropping on them; but when they say they don't mind she simply thanks them for not calling authorities on her. She's happy when they allow her to join in, and she introduces herself as Botan. Anne happily gets up to shake Botan's hand, but as a result Botan is reduced to a quivering mass with a hand injury. She assures the worried duo that she's okay and that her finger bones cracked as she quickly bandages it up with the medical kit she carries. Seeing how impressed they are, Botan explains that with as many injuries she's gotten over the years she has learned to administrate first aid.

This leads Ruri to wonder why she wound up with such a weird class as their Teacher, Ms. Kodaira shows up. After a quick introduction she explains how the school is specifically designed to focus on their students talents. Classes one through three focus on academics, while four through six focus on sports. None of the students knew this though, and Ruri mentions that this was never revealed on their exams, but Kodaira goes on reveal that class seven is for "happiness". Further confused, the students listen as she goes on to directly explain that everyone there is unfortunate in some shape or form. While some are born lucky, others are not, and as a result only some unfortunates are able to properly develop their talents or special skills. Ruri quickly denies being unfortunate, but Ms. Kodaira threateningly warns her that prior to the entrance exams some deep research was done on everyone, startling Ruri and making her quiet down.

She smiles again and assures everyone that this classroom was made to help all unfortunates become happy. Each day their misfortune will be measured and the students will receive training. Ruri remains uncertain while Botan or Anne seem fine with the idea. With that Ms. Kodaira silences the class and decides that they should change seats before starting their daily measurements. On each desk she put a piece of paper with a number on it for each student, and this will determine their spots in the room, as well as their overall luck- the smaller the number, the luckier each student is. Ruri opens her paper to see she is number 28 and questions how to feel about being in the middle, but she snaps out of it by claiming it's a mere coincidence. Anne goes on to ask how many students they have in class and Ruri answers forty, then she looks at Anne's paper to see she will be in seat forty; although it looks like a messy 49.

Ms. Kodaira ends the class after everyone has been given their numbers with some homework, and overly expired eggs appear on everyone's desk. She asks that they take care of them until the next day and bring back their eggs unharmed. If broken then they fail.

Ruri is still not happy by the turn of events, listening as Anne and Botan discuss their injuries from the day. They both feel a lot better since then, and Anne compliments Botan's ability to treat herself. Botan explains that this is because her dad is a doctor, although she is utterly useless as she can only treat herself. When the trio find out they all live near each other Anne suggests they walk home together, and while Botan agrees, Ruri is quick to refuse, claiming that she has some errands to do.

Anne is a little disappointed that they can't discuss their egg homework, but she finds herself distracted by the bright Sakura Trees above them. At least until a small cat catches her attention and she attempts to pet it; only for it to punch her and run away. Botan checks on Anne until they realize the cat somehow got into trouble, standing on a scarecrow within a big, wet rice field.

As this is going on, Ruri longingly observes some construction workers.

Without hesitation, Anne takes off her shoes to dive into the mucky water to try to save the cat. Botan attempts to help as well but she trips and falls down the hill, dropping her egg in the process when it falls out of her bag. The cat sees this and jumps forward, using Anne's head to propel itself over the field and onto the ground to eat the remnants. Anne is very confused, half-aware that she's become stuck.

Ruri makes her way home and is very depressed. She barely got to spend any time with her love on this new path between school and home. She observes her egg and wonders how it is supposed to bring her happiness, finding the whole idea to be silly while claiming yet again that she isn't unfortunate. She thinks back to the past for a moment, but snaps out of it when she overhears Anne and Botan calling out to her. To her shock she finds Botan with a bloody face hiding in the bush on top of the hill, and Anne stuck in the mucky rice field. Ruri complains and helps them out, and she scolds Anne for acting without thinking. She should consider the consequences of her actions next time. Anne agrees, but claims that because everyone was saved it is fine, and then remarks on how lucky she is. She thanks Ruri for such a great day, flustering her in the process.

With everything okay, the girls resume heading home and begin to bond. But Ruri becomes uncomfortable and she pulls away from Anne and Botan, causing her egg and a framed picture to fall out of her school bag. She freaks out in silence as Anne retrieves the picture, and both girls observe the figure within it before asking who they are. Ruri nervously explains that this person is very precious to her, and how she often heads out to the construction sight to see him. She used to get teased a lot because of it, but she can't help it. She's shocked as Anne returns the picture to her, assuring that she won't act like that because Ruri should be allowed to love whoever she does. It's not something to make fun of. Botan assures her that she feels the same way, and Ruri is taken back when they promise not to tell anyone else.

She calms down and begins to smile, deciding to head on home now; just to turn and realize her egg fell and is now broken.

The following day, Ms. Kodaira isn't surprised to know this happened. She asks that everyone writes down the cause of why the egg broke, and then turn in the paper. But to everyone's amazement, Anne is the only student with an egg still intact. It begins to hatch and to their surprise, a baby chick appears and hops up onto her head.
